Own Side Now Reviews!

The reviews are starting to arrive for Own Side Now:

NEW YORK TIMES: “But really Ms. Rose, 23, is indebted to a host of older styles: lite country of the 1970s, classic country of the 1950s, insular indie rock from a few years ago. She has a sweet, knowing voice and a penchant for lyrics that are far darker. On “Shanghai Cigarettes,” Ms. Rose smokes her way to the end of a relationship. On “Own Side,” she’s still pleading for mercy: “Who’s gonna want me when/I’m just somewhere you’ve been?”

She delivers these sentiments gently, backed by an effortless-sounding band. But she has a bigger voice than the whispers she sometimes puts forth. On “Sinful Wishing Well,” she unleashes it, put in the service of a masked apology for crimes of the heart. “Though I don’t know when I’ll hit the bottom, I’ve been falling for so long that I can’t tell,” she sings, like Patsy Cline learning to howl.” – Jon Caramanica

THE WASHINGTON POST: “Her take on love and romance notwithstanding, there isn’t a disposable note on her record, an album that not only rewards repeated listening but, given half a chance, will warm and break your heart.” – Bill Friskics-Warren

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Recommended for fans of Taylor Swift: “Her Mom has written for Taylor Swift, but Rose’s country-pop is fresh and original.”

THE DAILY NEWS (PA): “This is a great record, plain and simple.”

AUSTIN CHRONICLE: “…Own Side Now is a tantalizing debut.”

ALLMUSIC.COM: “Rose’s own songwriting gifts are on ample display throughout Own Side Now, with lyrics that show a knack for poetic turns and artful understatement in equal measure — a combination too seldom found in young songwriters’ work — and humble but hummable melodies that make the most of her grounding in both alt-country and pop.”

NO DEPRESSION: “In all, Caitlin Rose’s ten tracks on Own Side Now serve as a powerhouse arrival of a major talent. Her interpretation of classic American musical traditions is given a personal and emotional investment worthy of comparison to legends like Ronstadt, Nicks, Loretta, and Emmylou. Nothing feels forced or contrived, instead the album feels original and inventive, like a sound you swear you’ve heard before but not in this particular manner. As spring approaches and the thaw begins, this album should be the soundtrack to the reawakening.”

XPN.ORG: “Singer-songwriter  Caitlin Rose has an absolutely wonderful new album called Own Side Now that brings to mind the work of early Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, and Neko Case.”

AMERICANNOISE.COM: “…she shows a lot more personality on Own Side Now than most experienced vocalists can muster, with a quick wit and a valuable talent for finding the humor in even the darkest predicaments: Whether fashioning a back-in-the-saddle metaphor about love (“Learning to Ride”), smoking her way through a relationship (“Shanghai Cigarettes”), or recalling a bad break-up (pick a song), she’s never so blue she can’t crack a joke or a smile.”
